Sparwood's current sewage treatment plant is running close to capacity. With the amount of anticapted growth in our community, a new plant will become a necessity. Planning has already begun on this project, because it will be a long and expensive process to create a new plant. Construction is not expected to begin for 3 to 5 years.
While the exact location has not yet been decided, we are looking at an area that is south and downhill from the rest of town. This will eliminate issues associated with the plant being situated in town and the intent is to eliminate the requirement for sewage lift stations.
The first method the town and our engineers were interested in was The Deep Shaft Method. It is an old technology that has been given a new innovative spin. The Mayor and effected staff members travelled to Alaska to see this process in action. The foot print is small and the final product is excellent, therefore this is considered a green technology. Unfortunetly, there is not enough reliable data to prove that this method will work in the cold climate we have here in Sparwood.
The technology that we are now looking at is a more traditional method, but with the addition of the Bio-Gradex. This is also a new technology and will hopefully fetch us some grant money for the project.
Unfortunately, due to uncertain economic times the WWTP project has been placed on hold until furthur notice.
