Fire Protection
Fifty-one percent of respondents are aware that Sparwood has a Wildfire Protection Plan while only 38 % know that new landscape plans are being designed for the areas affected by mountain pine beetle. Slightly more people (43%) are aware of the new park planned for the area north of the Rec Centre.
Only 22% of respondents knew about the BC FireSmart Home Owners manual to help keep their homes and properties safe from wildfires and of the 79% that didn’t know, 45% requested a copy.
Some of the comments on the fire protection plan include:
- Cleaning up debris on the ground and pruning dead lower branches of trees for fire control (x 2 comments)
- I think It’s overkill with how many trees are taken-used to be a nice trail between Cypress and #43 now you can hardly walk through there and not without seeing houses and highway. For fire control where would that area even spread to??
- Fire suppression does not mean cutting every tree in sight down… can be done [by] leaving trees up, spacing them out properly and removing bushes, ground cover that will move the fire along
- Plan should include the area behind Valley View drive to the highway
- What’s happening with other areas that have been clearcut. One location - behind the ballfields, are they replanting?
- For the reasons of pinebeetle to fire protection the over logging that occurred in my back green belt was overwhelming. The cutting of green pine trees along or near my property line was pathetic. Thanks for the extra wind, noise, dust and the great view of the highway.
