Recreation and Community Services

The main source of information for events and opportunities in the community for the majority of people was the newspaper (54%) and the posters / bulletins (44%). Almost a quarter of respondents used other sources of information with half of those stating that word of mouth is their main source (11% of total responses). In addition, 39% of people didn’t know that the pool and arena schedule were available online.

Respondents were split on whether they would use the Recreation (Rec) Centre more if there were additional programs available and 37% of people would like different hours.  There were a variety of comments about different hours including: opening earlier (24%), later at night (28%), more weekend hours (34%), incorporating shift work hours, and better access to the gym (8%). Some of the comments about the recreation facilities were:

  • The programs are usually run through the day. Those of us that work are not able to take advantage of those sessions/programs.
  • More focus around the 4 x 4 schedule and mine schedules
  • The gym hours should be longer than what they are even with a card it is not enough
  • 6:00 am to 7:00am early mornings; 8:00pm - 10:00pm late night
  • Open earlier on weekends
  •  New tables should be purchased as the current tables are old and many are broken as well are very heavy to move.
  • Easier movement of any items throughout the rec center, particularly from the upstairs to downstairs or vice versa. This is a safety issue for both the volunteers and the staff.
  • We have a super community rich in volunteers and beautiful facilities. Making use of the facilities equipment and other items needed would make functions that much easier for all.
  • Would like to see more focus from the Rec Centre to other recreational groups in the community such as bike clubs and running clubs, baseball etc. Currently it seems as if they only emphasize pre existing programs and are not very cooperative in helping out new clubs. Funds to creating more bike/running trails would be popularly supported in this community great to see the bike jump park but also need more support for bush trails
  • I believe that the District of Sparwood should support our golf course more.

Almost everyone knew that Sparwood has a transit system but few would use it more frequently if times were changed (18%) or the bus stops were in different locations (11%).  Also, only 8% of people would use the Rec Centre more frequently if the bus went there more often.
