Lilac Terrace is owned and operated by the Elk
Valley Seniors Housing Society. The
society is a non-profit organization incorporated in July 2000. The Board of Directors for the society is
composed of members appointed by other societies in the community as well as
the District of Sparwood. There are
also seats available for members of the general public. Supportive Housing for seniors is a program
developed by British Columbia Housing Management Commission. Construction started on Lilac Terrace in August
2000, and was completed March 16, 2001.
There are thirty apartments, twenty-four one bedroom and six two
bedroom units. Of the thirty units,
six were designed for handicap living while the remainder is all handicap
adaptable. The handicap living apartments feature showers
rather than bathtubs as well as a kitchen layout that makes wheelchair living
functional. The counter tops are
lowered and they have counter top ranges with wall-mounted ovens. All apartments are equipped with grab bars in
bathrooms, lowered light switches and raised wall plugs. Lilac Terrace boasts a beautiful amenity building
where residents gather for fun and socializing. There is a living room with fireplace, television and pool
table, and always a jigsaw puzzle on the go.
The Library is well equipped for reading and also has two computers
with Internet access. The Craft Room
has received donations of materials and is in the process of getting
organized for use. There is a Scooter
Recharging Room, for battery-operated scooters. Many of the gentlemen living in Lilac Terrace have brought
their tools with them and are enjoying the workshop. Lilac Terrace provides, as part of the Care
Component, the supper meal seven days a week. There are four employees in the kitchen offering home cooked
meals and welcoming requests and suggestions from the residents. Meals are served in the beautifully
furnished Dining Room right to your table.
Consideration is given to those with special dietary needs, and the
cooks consult with the Hospital Dietician as needed. Lilac Terrace is the place for seniors who are
unable to continue living in their own homes, but are not ready for a care
facility. We offer the support they
need to continue living independently. |
