MINING COAL - ECONOMICS - Coke Manufacturing

Smelters didn’t use coal directly, but coke - a carbon-rich, gray, porous material produced by roasting coal in large banks of coke ovens at temperatures of about 1000 degrees C for about 48 hours.

Major coke manufacturing facilities in the Crowsnest Pass were located at Fernie, Michel, Morrissey and Hosmer in British Columbia and at Lille and Coleman in Alberta.

Crowsnest Pass coal is an excellent coking coal and superior to the coal mined on Vancouver Island for this purpose. On average, it took about 1.43 tons of coal to produce a ton of coke.
